Herb Marselas has almost three decades of experience spearheading graphic engineering and game technology development. Renowned for his expertise with the development of DirectX, Herb has played pivotal roles in numerous successful games, including the iconic titles Age of Empires series and Halo 2. With a track record of contributing to over a dozen games, collectively selling over 30 million units, Herb's impact on the gaming industry is undeniable.

 

His leadership extends beyond game development, as evidenced by his tenure as the CEO and development lead for a startup in Redmond, Washington. Currently serving as the Director of Technology at Handcranked Games, Herb continues to drive innovation in game development.

 

During his tenure at Amazon, Herb led the Mechanical Sensei simulation team, orchestrating a bottom-up simulation of Amazon's global supply chain system. This project, powered by Java and a complex Amazon EC2 environment, provided actionable insights into potential business optimizations.

 

Herb's expertise extends to his roles at Microsoft and AMD, where he delved into cutting-edge technologies like DirectX 11, DirectX 12, and DirectX Raytracing (DXR). As the Principal Graphics Engineer at Intel Corporation, he focused on Graphics Performance Analyzer and played a crucial role in productizing DirectX/Direct3D samples.

 

In addition to his contributions to Apex Engine, Herb is the founder of Spiral Light Design, a venture dedicated to developing software and hardware solutions for entertainment, games, AI, graphics, and GPUs. Herb's multifaceted experience and expertise position him as a key figure in driving innovation and shaping the future of the gaming and technology industries.
